Decorating with green during the fall season is mostly unheard of and unseen. But I intent to change that! In today’s post I am showing you how I styled one of our benches for fall. It’s not even a bench that is in our hallway or outside. It’s in our living room!

I’m going to let you in on a little secret…benches are not just for foyers. Don’t limit your home decor bench to just the foyer. Sprinkle benches throughout your home! Anywhere you think might be a great place to sit for a little bit; or just a spot to create a warm and inviting autumn decor vignette.

When we think of autumn decor we naturally think of rich and vibrant reds, oranges, gold and russet colors. But what about green?! There is a whole season of autumn and that means that green leaves and foliage is sprinkled throughout…at least in the earlier part of the season.

Using shades of green color for fall bench decor gives a refreshing and modern twist to the traditional autumn colors and themes. Plus if you incorporate different shades of green and textures your fall decor will feel both natural and sophisticated.

At least for now, the best part about decorating for fall is our living room carpet is already a burgundy color. So it pairs perfectly with any of the autumn home decor that we’ve used both old and new.

We also changed the living room wall color from a warm gold, which can be seen in the 5 Ways To Create A Cozy Fall Living Room Corner post, to a warm mushroom color. It’s a little lighter of a color than we had but it pairs perfectly with any season, especially with our fall decor.

How To Create Cozy Fall Bench Decor

To get started you need to have a bench. My suggestion is to shop your home first. If you can’t find what you’re looking for then head out to the stores. While you want a bench that looks great, you need for it to be sturdy. So be sure to test it a little for durability.

I found this gorgeous warm brown stained bench at Hobby Lobby and it replaced an older bench. Be sure to check out the DIY Trash to Treasure Sitting Bench Makeover to see what bench used to be in this spot in our living room.

Add Pumpkins

I always like to start with pumpkin decor. There are so many options out there for pumpkins either through color, size and/or texture. I love having all the options because not always do I want to decorate in the traditional autumnal colors.

The first pumpkin I added was this green knitted pumpkin from the Hobby Lobby fall decor line. It was just so super-soft and plush that it reminded me of a cozy cardigan or sweater. An added bonus is the stem is wrapped in jute which also gives this pumpkin a rustic farmhouse feel.

Next I added in this charming pumpkin pillow in an off-white color that I found in the Target fall decor $1 spot area or Bullseye’s Playground. The neutral color really makes the two other green colors pop.

By using textured pumpkins I’ve already accomplished tip #2 below.

I absolutely loved that it was a sunny day when I set up my fall bench!

Add Cozy & Inviting Textiles

Another element that you should always include in your fall home decor are throw pillows. I had this sage green fall pillow from last year. I picked it up from Marshalls and love that it’s handmade. I also love the added texture of the small brown beads that are sewn to read “blessed”.

While this element doesn’t scream fall bench pillow, it offers more of the subtle hint of that cozy feel in an uncomplicated way.

Of course, I absolutely suggest that you add a cozy autumn throw blanket. A fall bench isn’t complete without one! This autumn blanket was a throw that my husband bought for me as the 2nd anniversary gift. It actually was the perfect look for this cozy fall bench decor idea!

Instead of draping the throw I folded it because I wanted more of the leaf to be showing. There is our names, wedding date, our initials as a monogram and a sweet quote on the blanket. But for this look I wanted to highlight the brown leaf against the warm brown bench, green and off-white pumpkins.

Ironically, this sitting bench is located on the wall in our living that is right underneath all our framed wedding photos. So that throw blanket was the perfect touch!

Add Natural & Faux Foliage

I’ll preface this next step with the fact that although this jar shows a sage green and pumpkin bow on it, I did not leave it that way. I didn’t end up liking it but also forgot to get pictures of the jar without the bow.

That said, another great idea to add to your cozy fall bench decor idea is natural and/or rustic foliage. These faux eucalyptus stems are from Hearth and Hand with Magnolia. I want to say they are a spring line from a few years back. The faintly tinted green vase I believe is from Hobby Lobby.

The faux foliage stems, the vase and the little scalloped black stool (Marshalls) are things I already had in my home. So there was no added expense to create this textured, natural feel. If I wanted to, I could replace the green stems with rusted eucalyptus stems for a more rustic feel. But I wanted to also make this a budget friendly home decor idea.

Another option for adding foliage to your decor idea is to use natural branches. This is a simple, no-cost option especially if you just gather twigs and branches from your own yard.
