It’s just weeks before Christmas when all the gifts will be opened, enjoyed and cherished. But, if you are finding yourself still in need of a few gifts for a handful of family members that are hard to buy for, read on, for an easy solution to that gift giving problem!

This year, at our pared down Thanksgiving dinner, I sat looking around the table at my three immediate family members enjoying their meal. I began to think about just how much life has changed since Covid began and all the traditions that couldn’t (and rightfully shouldn’t) happen this year.

It made me sad to think of the warm and welcoming family gatherings we’ve had and how much they are and will be missed. It’s been a tough year for everyone and it also made me ask myself, ‘what are our new holiday traditions now?!’. I mean we do have traditions, but, I was struggling to come up with anything because I kept going back to the large family gatherings and how they won’t be happening this year.

With dinner over, my mind turned to when we will decorate our Christmas tree, which, we have always done the Friday after Thanksgiving (hey! this is a tradition!). So, as we decorated our Christmas tree this year, I thought about the traditions we’ll keep; but also what are some new traditions we could begin to replace those that we cannot do this year (because of Covid).

It was then that I remembered a Fingerprint Lights Christmas Ornament I had my daughter create, a few years back, as a gift to her grandparents. It was a great handmade gift idea that can be cherished for years. The best part is (and I wish I had thought about this at the time), you could have your kids do one of these ornaments annually. This makes it not only a tradition but also a a great memory keeper.

If you are in need of a last minute gift, this fun, easy and super cute handmade gift idea can be created with just 3 supplies (not including the child). {wink}

All you need is three supplies for this easy DIY Kids Fingerprint Christmas Lights Ornament

To make this handmade Christmas lights ornament, you will need:

  • White opaque Christmas bulbs
  • Any acrylic paint colors of your choice (we used blue, red and green)
  • Sharpie marker

Instructions

Step 1: Squeeze a quarter size amount of acrylic paint onto paper plates

Step 2: Have your child dip the tip of their finger into a paint color and gently press onto the bulb in a random pattern all around the bulb, alternating the colors

Step 3: Wait until the paint is dry then take your sharpie and draw a squiggly line around the top of each fingerprint in a pattern similar to strung Christmas lights. Remember to leave a small area above the fingerprint.

Step 4: Using your sharpie draw a lightbulb topper that connects the fingerprint to the strand.

Step 5: The final step is optional, which is to add your child’s name and the year along the top of the Christmas bulb.

Tip: If you want to give them as handmade gifts to family and friends, make sure to make one for your own Christmas tree.

It’s that easy! In five simple steps you’ve started a new tradition and created treasured keepsake ornaments for your family and friends.
