Personalized Charcuterie Board Gift Idea Using Cricut
Do you love Dollar Store finds and your Cricut cutting machine? Me too! That’s why in today’s post I’m sharing another Cricut Project with you that can easily be used for any kind of gifting. These Personalized Charcuterie Boards were created using Cricut vinyl and some chalk paint!

I’m back to share another fabulous Cricut gift idea that I created and gave one to each of my close friends. These Personalized Charcuterie Boards are each completely different and unique. They also made the perfect holiday gift for each friend!
While shopping at the Dollar Store I came upon these adorable 5 inch diameter wood cutting boards. They had a great shade of wood stain to them and the surface was perfect for some Cricut vinyl. I love how each one came out and each one was unique to my dearest friends’ (and family!).

While this Cricut project is quick and easy…it wasn’t so much for me. I encountered problem and problem until I finally solved it. So while this project was frustrating for me, I worked out the kinks and I’m sharing what worked and what didn’t when I created these Personalized Charcuterie Boards.
My biggest tip for any great Cricut project idea is to look at everything as inspiration. While I wouldn’t have used these wood boards for what they were labeled, which was as a cutting board; I still saw that they’d make a great craft project.
So when looking for cool Cricut blanks for your craft projects be sure to look in unlikely places, such as the Dollar Store, and don’t look at something for exactly what it’s labeled as.

Personalized Charcuterie Boards Details
This Cricut project turned out to be quite the problem for me. It seemed every time I tried to get the vinyl to stick it wouldn’t work. Many, many hours later and with the assistance of my husband (who sanded them down for me…multiple times!); I finally decided to try chalk paint. Thankfully it worked!

1
Prep Charcuterie Board
This first step really had multiple sub-steps! I went round and round with this charcuterie board and getting the Cricut vinyl to work on it. First I tried iron-on vinyl on the raw stained wood charcuterie board. That didn’t work at all.
So I had my husband lightly sand down the board and give it a clear poly coat. I let this dry for 48 hours and tried iron-on vinyl again; that didn’t work. Then I tested permanent vinyl; that didn’t work either.
Next, I had my husband lightly sanded the wood again. Tried iron-on vinyl again and it worked but barely. If you look closely at the picture above the vinyl isn’t perfect and the adhesive was kind of “leaking out” from around the vinyl as it was heating up.

With only one of the four charcuterie boards done I moved onto the next one. For this one I decided to give chalk paint a try. I’ve used chalk paint a number of times with Cricut permanent vinyl and it worked perfectly.
When painting your charcuterie board don’t forget to paint inside the hole where the ribbon goes to hang it.
So I crossed my fingers and gave each of the remaining boards 2 coats of chalk paint. I selected colors that would complement each friends’ home decor which added even more uniqueness to this gift.

2
Adhere Vinyl
The next step was to create each of the three remaining charcuterie board designs in Cricut Design Space. This was another area where I added a personalized touch to each friends’ charcuterie board.
It’s at this step where I will mention that since the charcuterie boards were chalk painted I used regular transfer tape to adhere the design. Since you are using permanent vinyl you might be inclined to use permanent vinyl transfer tape which has a stronger grip.
But, using permanent vinyl transfer tape against chalk paper and even paper project could potentially pull up your paint or paper.

3
Finished Project
All I can say is perseverance always pays off! This was undoubtedly one of my more challenging Cricut projects but in the end it came out perfectly. Now they are ready for gifting!
I created three chalk painted charcuterie boards and one sanded (iron-on vinyl) charcuterie board. The fourth one is shown under Step #1 above which was gifted to my niece.
Project Recap
- Round 1: Used iron-on vinyl on the raw stained wood. Result? Did not work.
- Round 2: Lightly sanded the stained wood and gave it a clear poly coat. Result? This did not work either.
- Round 3: Lightly sanded the wood again. Used iron-on vinyl. Result? It barely worked and I completed (painfully!) one board. With the next board,I used this same process and it didn’t work.
- Round 4: With the remaining three boards I lightly sanded the wood and used 2 coats of chalk paint. This worked!!
While this project was frustrating at the time, it also taught me a lot about using certain kinds of wood as Cricut blanks. Many times inexpensive (stained) wood purchased at a retail store has been treated which makes it unlikely it will work with Cricut iron-on vinyl.
This doesn’t apply to painted wood such as what was used in these Personalized Snowflake Initial Stocking Tags. Just something to keep in mind as you search for those unique Cricut blanks for your project!
