Want to create a cozy autumn table this Thanksgiving? Get tips on how to style a Fall Dough Bowl Centerpiece using faux candles, tiny lighted houses, seasonal pumpkins and flowers. In this post you’ll get all the tips to style your own with muted colors, natural elements and lots of texture!

I have to admit this is the first time I’ve used a dough bowl in my home decor. After creating this fall dough bowl centerpiece I can see why so many like them for autumn decorating! It’s the perfect natural element that easily can be styled with pumpkins of all colors, faux greenery, candles and more.

When autumn arrives, normally I’m jumping in head first for all the vibrant, rich autumnal colors. But this year I wanted a softer, neutral palette. This also means that I probably won’t use my Christmas dinnerware for our Thanksgiving dinner. Which I don’t think my daughter will be happy with since it’s kind of been a tradition for as long as I can remember.

But, my vision for this years’ Thanksgiving table centerpiece was for a warm, neutral table setting and decor. I wanted to keep the color palette soft and within the neutral shades of cream, beige and rustic brown.

All of the elements, except the table runner and candle, used in this fall dough ball centerpiece came from Hobby Lobby. In the supplies list below I’ve included any inventory code(s) so that you can easily find it.

Supplies

  • Wood dough bowl, large (sku #5014204)
  • Natural and white pumpkins wood decor (sku #5544051)
  • Light up ceramic houses (sku #6041321)
  • Tan hydrangea pick (sku #5693932)
  • White sunflower pick (sku #5604152)
  • Light brown sherpa pumpkin pick (sku #6041693)
  • Beige sherpa pumpkin pick (sku #6041701)
  • Taupe berry cluster pick (sku #6322689)
  • Glass LED faux candle (Target #MI-LC081-701; Dollar Spot)
  • Beige cotton table runner (Target #200138523)

I had also purchased some fall micro LED lights and cornhusk pumpkins. But, as the fall bowl centerpiece was coming together with each item I added, I felt I didn’t need those extra supplies.

Fall Dough Bowl Centerpiece

When guests arrive and come in the front door, our farmhouse table is the first thing they see. That’s why when fall arrives I love to add some warmth and coziness to the first view our guests get when they come into our home. Using soft, warm, neutral colors for a centerpiece is a great place to start.

1

Choose A Focal Piece

When starting to build a fall dough bowl centerpiece you want to have that one central focal point. Initially I was only going to use the trio of wood pumpkins but then decided to add the faux candle for ambiance.

Another creative element would be to use my Cricut machine to add vinyl designs and/or words to the wood pumpkins. Which I still might do. {wink}

2

Add Outer Layers

For this step it’s completely up to you how to proceed. You could start building your fall table centerpiece from the middle out or from the outer edge inward.

I chose to start adding outer layers and build my design towards the center focal point. I knew that I wanted to place the white sunflower picks at the outer corners. Plus this helps to minimize a “white out” at the center of the fall bowl decor since the focal piece has 2 white pumpkins.

When I was choosing my fall dough bowl arrangements the white sunflower was my the first choice. I do have a love of sunflowers and sunflower decor which you can see from my DIY Curio Cabinet Makeover.

3

Add Florals & Fillers

Now it’s time to begin adding fall dough bowl filler. By that I mean any kind of seasonal pick will work (such as these sunflowers, hydrangeas and sherpa pumpkins). You could, depending on the style of your dough bowl decor, choose to add in moss, greenery, real pumpkins and more.

Just a word of note about the taupe berry clusters…they do make a bit of a mess. The little clusters would come off and be all over the table. So if you have pets, please be sure to keep your centerpiece decor off limits.

When decorating a dough bowl for fall you want to use fillers that coordinate with your color scheme. Plus the point of fillers is to “fill” up the space. If you find you have open spots that are too noticeable you can add moss or crumbled up kraft paper.

4

Add Lights

There are three ways in which to add a little glow to your autumn table centerpiece. The first is by adding candles or faux candles. The second, by adding lighted elements. The last, is by adding in small light strands such as fairy lights.

For my fall dough bowl centerpiece I added both a faux candle, as well as four tiny light-up ceramic houses. Notice all of the lighting elements have a warm light tone. You don’t want to mix cool and warm lights in your fall table centerpiece.

Another point to make is this is a dough bowl which means the bottom is not flat such as in this Simple Fall Tray Decorating Idea. So to get my tiny ceramic houses level I simply used crumbled up kraft paper to level them out.

Keep the design balanced. As you build your fall dough bowl centerpiece, be sure to keep your design balanced. A balanced design is much easier on the eyes and doesn’t have one or more elements fighting for your visual attention.

5

Give A 360 View

While building your fall dough bowl centerpiece don’t forget about the backside. Be sure to give it a 360 view while also keeping the design balanced. Again, having a balanced design makes it really easy to maintain that 360 degree view.

6

Choose A Table Runner

The last step to create a beautiful Thanksgiving fall dough bowl centerpiece is to choose a table runner. As I shopped around for my perfect table runner I had a difficult time finding a neutral, textured table runner. Luckily at the last moment I found these two cotton table runners. Whew!

I grabbed both because I wasn’t sure which I would like best. Ultimately I chose the beige table runner. I felt it offered a more subtle transition between the dough bowl and the dark wood of the table. Plus this table runner gave the overall look just a hint more of texture in the design.

The beauty of adding in lighted elements to your fall dough bowl centerpiece is you can enjoy the glow of the centerpiece in the evenings as well!
