Easy Summer Decorating Ideas For Your Porch
This year summer is here and in full force. The weather conditions are all over the place it’s been either too hot or too rainy. But that hasn’t stopped me from decorating my porch like I usually do. If it’s raining then I get to sit on my front porch and relax while watching the rain fall. There’s something about when it rains, it’s very calming to me. Although I doubt many of our pets would agree with me.
If you’ve been following Behind the Designs Blog you’ll remember this before and after of the Front Porch Updates Welcome Summer post. I really loved how the red geraniums looked in the summer porch decor, so much so, that I carried them over to the other side of the front porch for a unified look. This porch area is to the right of the front door and spans the remaining length of the front of the house. Don’t you think the red color really pops against the yellow house, black shutters and screams summer?!

My husband and I would take walks around our neighborhood and I’d occasionally see a porch chair but nothing like our white rocking chairs that we found at Lowe’s. They go perfectly with the welcoming, relaxing vibe our wrap around porch and decor gives off. I think if I see them again I’m going to snag a few more for the side porch. That way I can use our white wicker porch furniture set in the gazebo area only.
Here’s another view of the same area from the opposite side. As you can see we still have that green painted floor. It’s easy to say let’s change it but much harder when you’ve used paint. My tip from personal experience, don’t paint porch floors unless you know 100% for sure you’re going to love them always. We have found not only is it crazy difficult to remove the paint, it also degrades the wood because the wood can’t breathe with the heavy paint over it.

The red and white buffalo check table square was actually a set of napkins that we found at a garage sale. I don’t recall where we got the table came from, but the rest of the decor all came from Michaels (I should own stock in that place!). When I saw those beautiful big red buffalo check pillows I fell in love with the idea of using them on our porch; adding them to the red geraniums in a market-style wicker basket made it all come together nicely for a warm and welcoming front porch.
The easiest way to start decorating your porch is to find a theme -something you love, be it a flower, a color or pattern. Then fan that out to other elements in the design for a magazine worthy look. I especially love to create little vignettes on the tables or in the corners of the porch. It just gives the whole look a little something extra. One element to always include is a quote sign. Adding a seasonal quote of some sort also lends to tying in all the part of your porch decor.

Every porch should have a porch rules sign or at least a “welcome to the porch” sign. I felt like I hit the jackpot when I found this sign at Michaels. It was like it was made to fit in that spot between the shutters and I couldn’t have planned it better. The quote reads:
- Porch Rules
- Take a Nap
- Sip a Drink
- Gather with Loved Ones
- Feel the Warm Breeze
- Relax
- Forget Your Worries
- Enjoy a Good Book
- Share Stories
- Listen to the Birds
All the important stuff you should do when on the porch! Wouldn’t you agree?! There are so many good suggestions I don’t know what to do first. Guess I’m going to have to do them all! Looks like I’ll need a planner bucket list to keep track of what I’ve done. {wink} I can’t wait for a warm day to grab some sweet tea and sit for a bit relaxing and listen to all the birds chirping nearby.
Just to add a little something extra to this seating area, I’ve been toying with the idea of creating a wood table top for the small table. I was thinking of doing it in the color of the wood around the porch rules sign. What do you think?

I have no idea what this little guy is but he photobombed my pictures. I’m sure he’s just stopping by to “take a nap” before he heads out again. I welcome all guests to my porch so today is his day to shine. Although I don’t know what this insect is but I think it’s some kind of angle shades moth. If you know what it is, please comment below. I’d love to find out!
It seems like every year I’m changing out pieces of my porch decor with the goal of freshen it up. Just like my door wreaths, creating a welcoming look to our porch decor each season is important to me. It’s the first thing visitors and passersby see and I’ll admit, I do love hearing feedback especially when they compliment how lovely our house looks. I personally feel curb appeal is important, but that’s just me. Now if it inspires someone to update their house look for the season, I think that’s great!
